Encara que no ha estat vida intel·ligent fora de la Terra... Gràcies al fet d'utilitzar el SETI@Home es va poder recuperar un ordinador portàtil robat!
One volunteer, James Melin, a software programmer for a county government agency in Minnesota, runs SETI@home on his seven home computers, which periodically check in with University of California servers. Whenever that happens, the servers record the remote computer's Internet Protocol address and file it in a database that people running the SETI software can view.
One of the computers on which Melin installed SETI@home is his wife's laptop, which was stolen from the couple's Minneapolis home Jan. 1.
Annoyed - and alarmed that someone could delete the screenplays and novels that his wife, Melinda Kimberly, was writing - Melin monitored the SETI@home database to see if the stolen laptop would "talk" to the Berkeley servers. Indeed, the laptop checked in three times within a week, and Melin sent the IP addresses to the Minneapolis Police Department

[Freedom to Tinker] AACS: A Tale of Three Keys. Accés a les claus de xifrat de l'HD-DVD, una possible via per trencar el xifrat de la nova tecnologia d'emmgatzematge de pel·lícules.
This week brings further developments in the gradual meltdown of AACS (the encryption scheme used for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs). Last Sunday, a member of the Doom9 forum, writing under the pseudonym Arnezami, managed to extract a "processing key" from an HD-DVD player application. Arnezami says that this processing key can be used to decrypt all existing HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. Though currently this attack is more powerful than previous breaks, which focused on a different kind of key, its usefulness will probably diminish as AACS implementers adapt.
